Modern Art Essay Some people consider modern arts not serious. In this regard, the question â€Å"Can we think of modern art as real art? † comes into existence. So to answer to this question we need to take for consideration what is art in general and what forms it has. There are a variety of arts, including visual arts and design, decorative arts, plastic arts and the performing arts. So, Art is defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. And artistic expression takes many forms: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, music, literature, and architecture are the most widely recognized forms. To begin with, when we speak about modern art, in most cases we think about the field of fine arts. Because exactly fine arts underwent the visible changes for centuries. The number of styles of painting is enormous. Artistic works can be grouped by styles according to the common principles of creative thinking. Each epoch is characterized by a certain worldview; that is why throughout the centuries the ways of thinking about art was also changing. Fine arts faced such styles as Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Realism, Impressionism and so on. Modern art refers to works produced during the period from 1870. Typically, modern artists rejected previous Renaissance-based traditions, in favour of new forms of artistic experimentation. They used new materials, new techniques of painting, and developed new theories about how art should reflect the perceived world. And nowadays there exists a great amount of styles of Modern art, for example: Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Performance Art, Dada Style, Neoplasticism, Surrealist Style, Postminimalism, Graffiti Art, etc. Concerning the question of modern art it’s quite difficult to judge, but nevertheless people are divided into two sides: pros and cons. First and foremost art implies the inseparability of form and content and of course talent. Famous artists affirmed that it is necessary to master the skill the main component of the art. But many modern works have lack of this component. Modern art has no its purpose to create the artistic work, that is why modern artists are indifferent to internal connection of form and content. Therefore it is impossible without accompanying comment; for example the artist can grab a canvas, paint it in different colours and put some strokes on it, and this kind of painting can represent his happiness. Because it is often said that modern art can be done without any talent or efforts. After all real art needs to show emotion, beauty, and needs to be a window to the artists  emotions. Art is something that you see and must look deeply into to understand or find beauty in. Modern art is art that a 5 year old can do so it has too little effort to be considered art. Many people believe that such so called artists are supported by the mass media, that is why their works are sold for million dollars. Every person could take a brush and do smth like that, but no one would buy this daub. They say Leonardo was a great artist. Raphael was a great artist, but modern ones can’t be compared. So for the great majority of people modern art is not serious. On the other hand, who is anyone to judge what real art is? After all our understanding of art comes to nothing more than our school knowledge about periods of Renaissance, Classicism or Modern. Just because one doesnt like or understand the art, doesnt mean that the art is not real art. Just thinking about bathing could cause a number of symptoms such as: breathlessness, dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or even an anxiety attack. Most people who are suffering from the phobia are surprised when they find out that they aren’t alone. Ablutophobia is surprisingly common. It is caused by the mind as a protective mechanism. From some point in the past there was a traumatic event linking with washing, bathing or cleaning. It could have also been formed from a realistic scare or even from movies, TV or seeing someone else experience trauma. Some people who suffer experience it all the time and some others experience it in just direct situations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Not only does it effect your health and quality of life but, Ablutophobia can have a severe effect on anyone that works or is in school; living with the fear can make it hard to concentrate on something and fully give your best. Ablutophobia can cause a loss of tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of your lifetime due to lost opportunities, poor performance or grades, or promotions that pass you by.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There are two different treatments for Ablutophobia; the ever popular temporarily suppress the phobia with potent, prescribed medicine, and therapy, self-help treatment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The medicinal treatment of Ablutophobia is only a temporary treatment to cover up the fear or make the person think that they are being medicated to not be scared anymore. The therapy treatment is more common and there are a few different therapeutic treatments. One is working with a practitioner to train the unconscious mind to connect different, positive feelings with the situation that triggers the phobia. After this you can stop the root of the fear of cleaning, bathing and washing. Another way is through a one day or sometimes, but rarely, a 1-6 day treatment program. TOPIC AND RATIONALE Gender stereotyping is a topic we find all around us and without exception in early years settings. There is a set of notions about how girls/women and boys/men are expected to behave in society, therefore is very difficult not to transmit those ideas in Early Education. Often we find children which already have implemented a gender role and behave based on our assigned sex. I have chosen this subject because I am aware, as I have to deal with that every single day, of how gender stereotype affects people. I believe the best way to fight this issue is through education and promoting gender equality in early childhood settings. At my placement I have already seen several situations where girls dress in pink as they consider is their favorite color, draw and wish to be princesses and would like to be ballerinas when they grow up. Boys spend all the playground time playing football or using their imaginary gangs, dressing in dark colors or not allowing girls playing in the building construction area claiming that is not a game for them. Being personally affected and observing this conduct in young children at the childhood practice setting and in the nursery where I work, was my motivation to write about this interesting topic, which in some situations touch children subtlety, and in others can trigger a negative impact affecting in many ways their being. AIM AND OBJECTIVES My target is to find out if gender equality is promoted in early years settings. RELEVANT THEORIES AND APPROACHES to children’s learning and development and links with knowledge acquired through the HNC HOW TOPIC LINKS TO CHILDREN’S INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, RIGHTS, AND INTERESTS Gender Equality is at the core of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which outlines in a few articles the relevance of the equality rights for all children independently of their gender. The Article 2 is directly related to the topic chosen and promotes non-discrimination. The Article 12 and 13 determinates the respect for the views of the child and their freedom of expression. Both of them encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings freely. Those right are important in the subject because their voices can be taken seriously if they feel affected by gender discrimination. The Articles 28 and 29 talk about rights and goals of education. Those articles promote education with the respect of the human rights including themselves, addressing gender discrimination and supporting equality among girls and boys. Finally, we have to have into consideration Article 4 which states that governments have to create systems and laws to promote and protect children rights, enabling all the above rights possible. Here a summary of the articles mentioned are shown: †¢ Article 2 – â€Å"The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities or any other status, whatever they think or say, whatever their family background.† †¢ Article 12 – â€Å"Every child has the right to express their views, feelings, and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right applies at all times, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.† †¢ Article 13 – â€Å"Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to access all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.† †¢ Article 28 –â€Å"Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.† †¢ Article 29 – â€Å"Education must develop every child’s personality, talents, and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.† †¢ Article 4 – â€Å"Governments must do all they can to make sure every child can enjoy their rights by creating systems and passing laws that promote and protect children’s rights.†

It was investigated which substances act as stimulants and which substances act as depressant. Initially, _Daphnia_ was placed on depression slide under the microscope and the average heart rate was determined. Subsequently, _Daphnia_ was treated with different type of hormone and the effect on Daphnia heart rate was observed. It was investigated which substances act as stimulants and which substances act as depressant. Daphnia was treated with aged water, caffeine, ethyl alcohol, nicotine, and epinephrine, and their effect on heart rate of Daphnia was observed. Why is the number of depressed students in college and universities so high? What are the causes of depression and suicidal thoughts? In December of 2005 a powerpoint was created of all details from a study called, â€Å" The Big 10 University Student Suicide Study. † The study takes the suicide rates for young age groups, suicide attempt rates in the US in 2001, and population in US college and universities. Based on what they knew by data that was gathered they estimated approximately 1,305 suicides among all college undergraduates per year. 1,004 of those suicides are student between the ages of 18-24. In the big ten, 74% of the suicides at the time of the survey were males, most suicides occurred at the age of 21 and as seniors and graduate student, and finally the suicides occurred on mostly on Wednesdays and in the month of October. I was extremely confused until she told me that suicide rates at Cornell University over the past year has increased dramatically. I found this very intriguing and decided to do some research on this for the paper. According to the article, Cornell University had no suicides between the years 2005 through 2008. The school has consistently fallen below the national average of suicide rates. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the national average is 7. 29 suicides per every 100,000 students. Cornell University’s enrollment for 2009-2010 was 19,639 which means that the school should average fewer than two suicides per year. That was not the case between Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. Six students committed suicide by jumping off the main bridge at campus that leads to the gorge. It is an extremely long fall. Two of the bodies washed downstream and ended up at SUNY Cortland College, which is a few miles away from Cornell. Many of the counselors and the psychologists at the school are baffled over what has taken place over the past year and are trying to come up with possible answers. Many of the counselors have come up with an educated hypothesis. They feel as if students are taking their own lives because   of the constant pressure that they are under in school. As we all know, Cornell is one of the most prestigious schools when it comes to academics. Counselors feel that students feel their classes become too overbearing to deal with, and take their lives to relieve themselves from stress. Many students must maintain a certain G. P. A in order to retain their scholarship every semester. If they do not keep their grades up, they undergo constant pressure to do well. Cornell University is doing everything in their power to educate students about the current problem at the school. Police officers and guards now stand at both entrances of the bridge and monitor the students that cross it. The university also sent out campus-wide emails in regards to coping with depression and how one may receive help or counseling at Cornell. The emails encourage the students to use the resources at the campus for help. ( Cassie 1) Based on these facts, it is shocking to learn that six students most likely took their own lives because of the pressures of school. This just goes to show you that we never know what certain students are thinking. The pressures of school may prove to be too much for a student. In extreme cases, a student will take their life just because they may not be able to keep a scholarship. No grade or amount of stress is worth the life of a human being. I felt that this topic of discussion would be best for me to use for my paper being that I am experiencing so much of it now. Based on the Cornell article, students are taking their lives because of grade problems which the researchers noted to be the number one cause of depression in college students. I feel that Cornell University should conduct a survey similar to the one I discussed earlier because they may receive feedback that is essential in preventing more suicides. The University may be able to come up with new strategies on how to cope with depression and suicidal thoughts. Counselors and professionals should be available for all students to have access to when stress and anxiety gets to rough. I personally have trouble with stress and anxiety and having people to talk you and lead you into a positive direction and way of coping is absolutely helpful.
